43: My SEO Content Planning Process (how I plan 3+ months of content)

One of the biggest issues I see with SEOs and businesses growing with SEO:

  • Not having a strong content planning process

  • They do all of the juicy keyword research, but then fail to prioritize and schedule out the content creation.

  • Let me tell you — keyword research is nothing unless there’s execution behind it.

That’s why I put together this quick guide on my Content Calender Process.

Use this guide to create and execute a 90-day SEO content plan.

The key ingredients: Knowing your ICP, top-notch keyword research, & prioritization.

Advice: Save this, make it your own, & improve your SEO content planning SOP. Adjust every quarter.

Let’s get started!

1/ Identify your ideal customer- Identify your 10 top competitors.

- You can't plan content if you don't know your ICP.

- Why? Because your keyword research DEPENDS on it.

- The more accurate your ICP = the better keywords you'll find.

2/ Brainstorm the core Hub & Spokes

- What are the core topics your ICP is searching for related to your business?

- Brainstorm & make a list in a Google Sheet.

- Bonus: Use ChatGPT to help create ideas.

- Aim for 10+

3/ Research BOFU & MOFU keywords

- Go down the keyword research rabbit hole.

- Use Ahrefs, SEMRush, or a similar KWR tool.

- Search the Hub keyword then use the tool's Suggestions features to find more.

4/ Repeat until 100s of keyword ideas

- Research for 1-2 hours to start.

- Add relevant BOFU & MOFU keywords into your Google Sheet with KD & Volume.

- Go until you hit 100+ keywords.

5/ Prioritize by BOFU & MOFU

- Now, add a column "Funnel" and identify as BOFU, MOFU, or TOFU.

- When done, sort the column so BOFU is on top.

- If there's BOFU keywords, you want to tackle those first.

6/ Schedule 90 Days of Content

• Choose how many articles/pages you're creating per month.

- Ideally it's 5-10+

- Add a Priority column and mark out months for each keyword.

7/ Execute & publish

- Run one final check --make sure you're happy w/ the 90 day plan.

- Push the content plan into motion with your team.

- Create outlines, write, edit, optimize, publish, and index.
