How I Measure AI Visibility (4 Metrics)
Most SEOs have no idea how AI sees their brand. Here's how I track it.

What does ChatGPT say when a buyer asks for a recommendation in your category?
I've run SEO across 6 businesses for 16 years. I track rankings, backlinks, and traffic every single week. But for a long time, I had a real blind spot: I had zero visibility into how AI engines were talking about my brands.
Buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for product and service recommendations every day. Those answers shape decisions before anyone visits your site. And most teams have no clue what those answers actually say.
Now, I turn AI visibility into something I can measure.
Here’s how to build your tracking system:

Step 1: Define your prompt set. List the real questions buyers ask AI when evaluating solutions in your category. Think of it like building a keyword list, but for AI search.
Step 2: Run those prompts across the major engines today. Document where you appear, how often, and how AI describes you. That's your baseline.
Step 3: Benchmark competitors. Note which brands appear when you don't. Visibility gaps often reveal where your market perception differs from your actual positioning.
Step 4: Track monthly. One snapshot won’t give you the full picture.
Once you’re tracking, measure these 4 metrics:
1/ Appearance Rate: How often does your brand show up across your tracked prompt set?
2/ Share of Voice: Appearing three times means little if a competitor appears nine. Your share of the answer is the real competitive signal.
3/ Sentiment Accuracy: Presence isn't enough. Accuracy matters more. Wrong pricing or positioning in an AI answer can cost you the deal before a single conversation happens.
4/ Citation Sources: AI pulls from specific pages, reviews, and third-party sites. Know what's feeding your mentions so you can reinforce and expand it.
Then, pair your metrics for the full picture.
Appearance Rate without Share of Voice means you don't know if competitors are dominating the same conversations. Presence without Sentiment Accuracy means a bad mention might be hurting more than helping. Citation Sources without Competitor Gaps means you're missing where authority is actually being built.
AI visibility is a metric. Treat it like rankings.
