How To Effortlessly Translate Your Website for SEO

Rank globally with this step-by-step multilingual SEO guide.

Hey Savvy friends!

Ever thought about translating your website for global SEO?

This guide walks you through how I use WeGlot to create multilingual websites effortlessly.

It’s an opportunity to rank in new countries, drive more traffic, and reach a wider audience.

Let’s dive in:

1/ Decide which languages I want

  • Choose the specific 2-5 languages I want my website to be available in.

  • Languages that match the countries where I want my website to rank.

2/ Download the WeGlot Plugin

  • I usually use Wordpress so I download the WeGlot plugin and activate.

  • It’s available on Webflow, Wix, Shopify, and many others.

  • To get it rocking, create a free WeGlot account.

3/ Create a WeGlot Project

  • Add details about my site and select the languages I chose in step 1.

  • Set up “Subdirectories” for the new language pages.

  • This avoids duplicate content issues in SEO.

4/ Let the translations happen

  • Push WeGlot live! You’ll now see a “Select language” option.

  • Click and change the language to see the translated page.

  • All translations are done with Google Translate and DeepL.

5/ Create translation rules

  • For example: “Never translate my brand name”.

  • For example: “Always translate shop to boutique in french.”

  • I get creative here so it aligns with each language.

6/ Review & edit the translations

  • I don’t want to just translate blindly and let it be.

  • It’s important to customize, localize, and edit.

  • I go through each translated page and make edits as makes sense.

7/ Hire a translator to review

  • If I don’t know a language I’m translating to, I hire someone that does.

  • Have them review the content, make edits, and optimize for the local language.

  • Do it on your own or have WeGlot connect you with one.

8/ Customize the translated media

  • If my content is translated, I want my media to be as well.

  • I don’t want someone confused by US media when they’re in Japan.

  • WeGlot can help you do that as well.

9/ Edit the “language switcher”

  • Add brand colors, change which languages appear first, and put it wherever I want on the page.

  • I aim to make it as user friendly as possible.

Bonus #1: Enable “auto translate”

This will make it so that the page is automatically translated depending on their browser language.

Bonus #2: Study the analytics

See page views, most popular languages being requested, where traffic is coming from most, and new languages you may want to add to your translations.

Outcome

Translated content opens your website to new SEO traffic and lead potential.

You can start ranking for keywords on Google in other countries.

You quickly go from only being able to rank for 1 country to ranking in many countries depending on which languages you translated to.
