How To Plan Your SEO Content With Content Clusters

Today, I want to talk to you about “content clusters” and how they can help your SEO.

“Content clusters” are a set of pages and blog articles that all link to each other focused on one main topic.

You may also hear them called topic clusters, pillar pages, or hub and spoke.

They all mean the same.

I use content clusters to plan SEO campaigns & rank for important target keywords on my company's sites and client’s sites.

Here’s my step-by-step process:

1/ Choose a topic to rank for

• Pick a top keyword for your company or client that it's important you rank for.

• This will be your starting point.

2/ Plan out a pillar page

• Do keyword research & choose a pillar keyword.

• Make an outline for an ultimate guide. Aim for 5k+ words.

• This is what you'll build your cluster on top of.

3/ Plan 5-10 cluster pages

• Research and create a 5-10 blog content cluster.

• Write down titles for each and focus keywords.

• Your cluster should relate back to the pillar keyword.

4/ Create & publish the pages

• Write the content and publish the pillar and cluster pages on your site.

• Aim for the highest quality possible.

5/ Internal link all of them

• Link from your pillar page to each cluster page. And vice versa.

• Make it super easy for users and Google to navigate the cluster.

6/ Incorporate existing blogs

• If you have content already published that can fit into the cluster, link them in too.

• This is a great opportunity to improve your site architecture.

7/ Make complementary clusters

• Think of other Pillar pieces to complement this one you just made.

• Repeat the process.

• Build 10+ clusters on your website.

8/ Measure results & improve

• Track traffic and keyword rankings for your new content cluster.

• Make improvements quarterly.

• Let it guide your keyword strategy.
