They don’t have to be.
I’ve been growing businesses with SEO for 10+ years, and I’ve found that there’s a process behind creating blog posts that rank and read well every time.
It starts with a solid outline.
A clear structure ensures your writing is spot-on while giving your content the highest potential to rank.
So…no more winging content creation.
Follow my 15-step process for creating the perfect SEO blog outline.

Need help writing content consistently? Let’s chat about an SEO strategy for your business.
1/ Give It an SEO Title
Your SEO title is the clickable title that appears on search results.
Get ideas from competitors ranking on page 1 of SERPs.
Notice how their titles are worded, then whip up something more click-worthy.
2/ Identify Your Target Keyword
Your target keyword is the exact search phrase your target audience is typing into Google.
Pinpoint one and build your content around it.
3/ Add a Search Intent Label
This ensures you know how to write the content to satisfy your reader’s search intent.
Your blog post can be:
Informational: Educate your reader about a specific topic.
Navigational: Lead your reader to a page or website.
Commercial: Present options to a reader who’s doing research on a potential solution.
Transactional: Provide clear solutions, benefits, and call to action to nudge towards a purchase.
4/ Optimize Your Title and Meta Description
Include your primary keyword in the title and meta description. Then ensure they are engaging, descriptive, and clickable.
Example:
Meta title: SEO Blog Outline: How to Structure Content that Ranks
Meta description: Learn how to create an SEO blog outline step by step. Structure your posts with keywords, headings, FAQs, and CTAs to drive traffic and conversion.
5/ Hook Readers With a Snappy Intro
Grab your reader’s attention by calling out a pain point that your blog post will address.
Keep it snappy, infused with your personality, and entertaining enough so readers will want to read on.
6/ Include an H1 Title
Your H1 heading is the main heading that introduces the blog post to your reader.
Each blog post should have only one H1.
Example:
H1: How to Create an SEO Blog Outline
7/ Break Down Main Topics with H2 Headings
Your H2 headings are your blog posts’s sub-topics, which can be anywhere from five to ten per blog post.
Separating each sub-topic with an H2 ensures scannability for readers and search engines.
Example:
H1: How to Create an SEO Blog Outline
H2: Step 1: Research the Right Keywords
8/ Further Clarify with H3 Headings
If a section needs to be fleshed out further, break down an H2 with H3 headings.
Example:
H2: Step 1: Research the Right Keywords
H3: How to Use Ahrefs or Semrush for Keyword Research
9/ Link Back to Other Pages
Help your reader to make their way to other pages on your site. Use keyword-rich anchor texts that link back to other pages and blog posts.
Tip: Get creative. Avoid generic anchor texts like “click here”.
10/ Boost Your Credibility with Backlinks
Guide readers to reliable resources outside your site to improve your post’s credibility.
For example, if you’re writing on SEO blog posts, trusted sites you can link to include Semrush, Ahrefs, and Google Search Central.
11/ Insert an Eye-Catching Image
Break up text blocks with an image.
Make sure your chosen image adds depth to the post, visually demonstrates a topic you’re fleshing out, or clarifies steps you’re trying to explain.
12/ Enrich with Expert Insights
Add authority to your blog post by demonstrating your experience and expertise.
Note, too, that displaying EEAT (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness) ensures your content gets picked up by Google as a trusted resource.
13/ Convert with Compelling CTAs
Sprinkle calls to action (CTA) at the top, middle, and end of the blog post to lead readers to an action.
Remember: Your content shouldn’t just be engaging–it has to convert.
14/ Answer More Questions with FAQs
FAQs are a great way to give your content more depth plus improve the reader’s experience with your blog post.
Position your FAQ section right after your last sub-topic.
15/ Wrap Up the Blog Post
End the blog post with a powerful close that:
Reinforces your main point
Directs your reader to a clear step forward
Adds personality to the post
Leaves a strong final impression
Congrats–you’ve just created a blog post that’s ready to rank! 🎉
