Ranking Is Not Enough in AI Search

AI search is changing how people discover software.
Instead of clicking through 10 blue links, buyers increasingly ask tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews directly:
“What’s the best tool for X?”
The answer often comes back as a short recommendation list.
That’s a big deal for SEO teams, because ranking well in Google doesn’t guarantee you show up in AI answers.
This creates a new question:
Which sources are AI systems retrieving to generate answers?
Recently, the Peec AI research team analyzed 232,000 citations across six AI search platforms to better understand how these systems select sources.

The study tracked citations across:
ChatGPT
Google AI Mode
Google AI Overviews
Perplexity
Microsoft Copilot
Google Gemini
Interesting patterns emerged:
Across the 232,000 citations analyzed:
~11% of citations come from self-promotional listicles
ChatGPT shows the lowest rate (~3–5%)
Google AI Mode and Perplexity sit around ~10–11%
In other words: AI search platforms retrieve very different types of sources depending on the model.
And many of those sources aren’t necessarily the pages ranking highest in Google.
What does this mean for SEO teams?
Traditional SEO focuses on rankings and traffic. AI search introduces a second layer: retrieval visibility.
Even if you rank well in Google, your brand might not appear in the sources AI systems use to generate answers.
That’s why more teams are starting to track something new: AI visibility.
