So many SEO metrics, so little time!
Do you know which ones to track?
Hey savvy friends, it’s Connor! 👋🏻
If you’re wondering how to make sense of your SEO numbers, I’m here to help.
I’ve tested dozens of reporting tools, experimented with different strategies, and finally come up with a process that’s straightforward, clear, and impactful for my SEO.
Let me break it down:
1. Set Up Your Tracking HQs
These will provide insights into your site performance and traffic. Plus, you can create accounts for free:
Google Analytics
Google Search Console
Bolster your data with either Semrush or Ahrefs. Both can help you:
Analyze your backlink profile
Measure keyword rankings
Research your competitors
2. Create a Dashboard with Google Sheets
Nothing fancy, just your data organized and easy to read.
Label columns with months of the year
In the rows, list the metrics you want to measure
3. Track Key SEO Metrics
Don’t know which metrics to measure? I got you.
These are core metrics that I track each month:
Traffic
Total Users: Volume of unique visitors coming to your website
Pages Per Session: Average number of pages a user visits before leaving
Bounce Rate: Percentage of users who leave without clicking to another page on your site
Traffic Channels: Organic, direct, or referral
SEO
Domain Rating: Score representing the strength of your backlink profile
Total Linking Domains: Number of unique websites linking back to you
Total Inbound Links: Number of backlinks pointing to your website
Ranking Keywords: Number of keywords your website ranks for
Leads
Email Signups: Number of people who subscribed to your email list
Lead Magnet Downloads: Number of users who downloaded a free resource in exchange for contact information
Sales Call Bookings: Number of leads who scheduled a discovery or sales call
Content
Top 10 visited pages and blogs
Search
Clicks: Number of times users clicked on your website from search
Impressions: Number of times your site appeared in search results
Click-Through-Rate: Percentage of impressions that turned into clicks
Average Position: Average rank your pages appear in SERPs
Ranking of Top Keywords: How your top keywords are ranking during a specific timeframe
Top Queries: Search phrases people used to trigger your website to come up in search
Site Performance
Load Speed: Average time it takes for your website to load
Core Web Vitals: Google’s set of metrics to measure user experience on your pages
Mobile Usability: Level of ease and readability of your website on mobile
👉🏻 Does this seem like a lot? My team of experts at TrioSEO can do the heavy lifting for your SEO strategy and analytics.
4. Backfill Data to Reveal Trends
Once your current data is complete, go back in time and fill your dashboard with 12 months of historical data.
This will help you spot trends in your SEO, reveal your progress over time, and give you perspective.
5. Establish a Rhythm
Make analytics a habit.
Set a schedule each month to make it easy to remember.
What I do is record the data every first of the month.
6. Analyze the Data
Interpret the numbers by asking questions like:
Am I getting more leads from organic traffic?
Which content is ranking higher?
What changed from last month?
It shouldn’t take too long. 30 minutes is enough.
7. Make an SEO To-Do List
Based on insights from your data, create an actionable list of things to do to improve your SEO performance.
8. Train Your Team
You don’t have to be the one doing this each month.
Equip your team to:
Pull the data
Input figures correctly
Draw insights and form an actionable plan
Reliable Data = Effective SEO
SEO analytics takes only 30 minutes to set up and 1 hour to run every month.
That’s a small slice of your schedule that will impact your entire SEO strategy and make it work. Every time 💪🏻
Work smarter, not harder, fellas.
